Goods and Service Tax (GST) comes into existence on 1st July 2017, abolishing previous indirect tax systems and reforms all the previous indirect tax in to one tax regime. This is the biggest and much awaited tax reform in India. The goods and services are now taxed under one law.

Presently major goods and services are taxable at nil rate or 5% or 12% or 18% or 28% of GST as per the classification of goods and services. GST council time to time makes changes in the list of items falling under the tax slab.

There are two schemes for GST registration Regular scheme and Composition Scheme.

Applicability of Registration

  1. Registration under GST is mandatory for all organizations dealing in taxable goods or services, based on the turnover criteria. GST registration requirement is divided into two different categories for goods and services, which are further categories into two sub categories as North East states and Rest of India as per the below given table.

  2. Previously Registered:- Registered under previous Indirect Tax Laws such as Sales Tax, VAT, Service Tax, etc.
  3. Interstate business:- Any entity dealing in interstate business of taxable goods and services must have registered them under GST.
  4. Casual taxable person:- Casual taxable person is the one who occasionally supplies goods and/or services in a territory where GST is applicable but he does not have any fixed place of business such person is also required to get registered its business under GST
  5. Non-Resident taxable person:- Non-Resident taxable person is a person who is not resident of India and dealing in taxable Goods and Services in India is required to get registered its business under GST.
  6. Taxable Under Reverse Charge:- Every Business entity who is liable to pay tax under Reverse Charge Mechanism.
  7. E commerce Business:- Every entity portal owner or vendor doing business through e commerce platforms must be registered under GST.
